ATTENTION: Columbia Univ. Summer Public Health Scholars Program

Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons is hosting the Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP), a ten-week summer program for underrepresented minority students to increase interest and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers.

The Summer 2012 Program spans May 28th to August 3rd.

Eligible Participants are:
-Students who have completed at least two years of college or recent college graduates
-African American/Black, Hispanic /Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander and/or economically disadvantaged

SPHSP offerings include:
● Public Health field experience
● Seminars and lectures with public health leaders
● Faculty mentoring
● Visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA
● Stipend upon program completion

Update: CUNY Rate Increase for 2011-2012 Year

More information concerning the City University of New York (CUNY) rate increase for the 2011-2012 year. Full-time resident undergraduate students at senior colleges will pay $300 more for the 2011 school year, raising the total annual cost to about $5,100 per student. Law students will pay $670 more in 2011, bringing the annual tuition up to roughly $11,400. Master’s degree students will pay anywhere from $480 to $710 more per year, depending on the program. ATTENTION: CUNY Rate Increase for 2011-2012 Year

On Thursday, July 21, the CUNY Board of Trustees voted to adopt a tuition increase for the 2011-12 academic year. The increase will go into effect for the coming fall semester. Tuition for full-time undergraduate students will increase by $150 per semester; tuition for full-time graduate students will increase by $240 per semester. Part-time and nonresident students will see a corresponding increase to the per-credit rates.

NYC DOE: School Starts on Thursday, September 8

In an effort to prepare students for the level of rigor they will encounter in college and careers, the DOE is focused on aligning instruction with the new Common Core State Standards.

The Common Core State Standards were developed to instill a common understanding for students, parents and educators about what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school and are aligned to college and career expectations. The Common Core State Standards include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills and are internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in the global economy.

Over the past few months, the DOE heard from principals about the need for more time to plan for next year, particularly to prepare to roll out the important set of instructional work related to these higher standards and improving teacher practice. To this end, in partnership with the UFT and CSA, they have added an additional day for professional development and planning before the school year begins to give principals and teachers the time necessary to do this work well. This means that students will begin school on Thursday, September 8, 2011, one day later than previously announced.

The American Association of Black in Energy (AABE) is a professional organization of African Americans in the energy industry. Through its scholarship program, the AABE seeks to increase the number of African Americans and other minority groups in energy-related fields. Applicants should be entering an accredited college or university, and have a 3.0 GPA. Application due March 11, 2011.

Launched by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, NYC Ladders for Leaders is a joint program of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Commission on Women’s Issues (CWI).

Who can apply?
Anyone with prior work experience (paid or volunteer) who is:

- A permanent resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City
- 16 to 21 years of age
- A current high school junior, high school senior, college freshman, or college sophomore
- Legally allowed to work in New York

ATTENTION: NYC College Bridge Program

For recent High School and GED grads who are interested in going to college but think you may need some extra help before you start, you should consider applying for the College Bridge Program!

The NYC College Bridge Program is a 13 week course designed by District 79 to help recent high school and GED graduates build skills in reading, writing, and math in order to pass the CUNY and other college entrance exams like the ACT and SAT.

Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus presents their Liberty Partnership Summer Enrichment Program for high school juniors and seniors.

The program spans August 3rd- August 31st from 10AM- 3PM. The program takes place at LIU- Brooklyn at 1 University Plaza.

ATTENTION: Free IT Training For High School Students

Free IT Training

Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internship. The program is providing free IT training for anyone in that category with a high school diploma or a GED that has an interest in IT. The program is free.

This program asks for a 1-year commitment between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm. Each participant will be provided with a stipend, and after six months, internships at competitive companies could be available.

Year Up has achieved excellent results to date:

90% of apprentices meet or exceed apprenticeship partner expectations

ATTENTION: NYU Hosts BEST/Career Exploration Program for High School Students.

The Building Excellence in Science and Technology Program (BEST)is an innovative pre-college enrichment program based at New York University for talented high school students that encourages the presence of historically under-represented groups in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM careers).

NYU's summer Career Exploration Program will operate Monday through Thursday, July 6– July 29, from 9:30am to 3:00pm. During this time, students will not only have the unique opportunity to investigate careers that appeal to their interest, but they will also be able to develop the skills necessary to excel in these professions as well.

The summer program is designed to deliver instruction through the scope of four focused career cohorts: Pre-Law, Business and Accounting, Pre-Medicine & Health, and Engineering. All coursework is designed to teach students the practical applications of the skills and concepts in mathematics and critical thinking (writing and reading) as they relate to a student’s desired career field. In addition, students will be able to participate in trips, career panels, and independent study to showcase what they have learned about their respectivecareer cohorts.

This is a unique opportunity for your child to take the preliminary steps in bringing his or her future career goals into fruition. There is no cost to participate in the program, trips, and activities; however, there is an optional lunch fee of $175 for the duration of the program, which is payable by check or money order to New York University. ATTENTION: Syracuse University Summer College NYC Scholarship Program

The Syracuse University Summer College NYC Scholarship Program is designed for high school students completing their junior year in good academic standing who demonstrate maturity, self-discipline, and the potential to handle college-level work. During the six-week program students explore college-level courses that provide insight into the highter education experience. The selection process is competitive and awarded students will attend the program at no cost.

Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered, applicants must-
-be a current junior attending a NYC public high school
-be in good academic standing with a minimum average of 85%
-be mature, disciplined, and ready for college-level work

Program Overview
-Students selected for participation in this program attend on full-scholarship. Tuition, room & board, books and transportation to and from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, are provided.
-The program offers six credits of college-level instruction taught by School of Education professors, and instructors from the Writing Program in The College of Arts and Sciences.
-Students enroll in two 3-credit courses (CFE 200 and WRT 104)
-Upon completion of the classes, an SU transcript documents the coursework and grades/credits earned.
-Students learn about issuesof youth, schooling, media literacy, popular culture, democracy, and writing at the college level. Emphasis is on improving literacy and developing college-level learning skills.
-Program takes place on the Syracuse University place.
-Students live in an SU dormitory and eat in a campus dining facility.
-Classes are from Monday through Thursday. Fridays are reserved for curriculum-based field trips and special events.
-Afternoons, evenings, and weekends are for recreation and socialization with students from other Summer College programs and for working on class assignments and projects.
