ATTENTION: NY For Better Neighborhoods Grants Available!

Citizens Committee for New York City has released the application for their New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods Awards. Volunteer-led community groups, as well as public school-based student groups, are encouraged to apply for grant funding up to $3,000 to support neighborhood improvement projects in their communities. The grants are an important resource for community groups, particularly in low income areas. Recent awards have enabled neighbors to come together to make healthy food available in their communities, transform empty lots and school lawns into community gardens, organize tenants to advocate for better housing conditions, and start school recycling programs. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2012.

The Citizens Committee is offering 6 information sessions to assist groups who may be applying for a grant. The dates for these sessions are listed below. RSVP is required for each workshop, as space is limited.

ATTENTION: American Federation of Teachers Black Caucus Scholarship Available

The American Federation of Teachers Black Caucus Scholarship is available for high school seniors who are currently applying for admission to an accredited college or university in the United States for Fall 2011. Scholarship recipients will receive a certificate of merit and a financial award of $1,500.

To be eligible for the American Federation of Teachers Black Caucus Scholarship:
- You must be a resident of New York City;
- You must be a high school senior of a New York State public school with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent);
- You must be in pursuit of a career in education/public service;
- You must be able to demonstrate improvement in your academic performance and personal achievement.

The applicant must submit a completed application packet (including attached essay response) postmarked no later than April 29, 2011 to:

ATTENTION: AABE Scholarship Program

The American Association of Black in Energy (AABE) is a professional organization of African Americans in the energy industry. Through its scholarship program, the AABE seeks to increase the number of African Americans and other minority groups in energy-related fields. Applicants should be entering an accredited college or university, and have a 3.0 GPA. Application due March 11, 2011.

Through New Yorkers for better Neighborhoods, Citizens Committee for New York City awards of $500 to $3,000 to volunteer-led groups to work on community improvement projects.

Citizen's Committee believes that people can make important change in their communities by working together. They support New Yorkers across the city in their effort to build stronger communities. In addition to small grants, they offer one-on-one project planning assistance, skills-building workshops, and a resource center with access to computer stations, conference space and an equipment loan library.

ATTENTION: CHMC Seeking Paid Volunteers for NY Juvenile Justice Corps Positions

The Crown Heights Mediation Center is looking for candidates for paid volunteer positions that will start in October 2010. The positions will be offered through a new AmeriCorps program called the New York Juvenile Justice Corps. The program will serve young people currently involved or at risk of becoming involved in the juvenile justice system. Corps members receive a living stipend of $11,100 and an educational award of $5,350. The application deadline is August 30th, 2010.

And Caribbean-born men in Brooklyn are three times as likely to die from the disease as U.S.-born men." Save The Double D Pool

On June 20th, Council Members James and Levin joined Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (who apparently donned his swimming trunks) and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery at a demonstration protesting the City's decision to close of one Brooklyn's most popular outdoor swimming pools- The Double D Pool. It is located at the Thomas Greene Park in Brooklyn, and provides free services (lunches, training, etc.) for residents of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens. There's a petition here.

Through New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods the Citizens Committee for New York City may grant awards of between $500-$3,000 to volunteer-led groups to improve their community.

Projects may include providing healthy food, transforming empty lots, organizing tenants or starting school recycling programs. Any idea you may have to improve the quality of life in your community may be eligible.
