Update: CUNY Rate Increase for 2011-2012 Year

More information concerning the City University of New York (CUNY) rate increase for the 2011-2012 year. Full-time resident undergraduate students at senior colleges will pay $300 more for the 2011 school year, raising the total annual cost to about $5,100 per student. Law students will pay $670 more in 2011, bringing the annual tuition up to roughly $11,400. Master’s degree students will pay anywhere from $480 to $710 more per year, depending on the program. ATTENTION: CUNY Rate Increase for 2011-2012 Year

On Thursday, July 21, the CUNY Board of Trustees voted to adopt a tuition increase for the 2011-12 academic year. The increase will go into effect for the coming fall semester. Tuition for full-time undergraduate students will increase by $150 per semester; tuition for full-time graduate students will increase by $240 per semester. Part-time and nonresident students will see a corresponding increase to the per-credit rates.

ATTENTION: AABE Scholarship Program

The American Association of Black in Energy (AABE) is a professional organization of African Americans in the energy industry. Through its scholarship program, the AABE seeks to increase the number of African Americans and other minority groups in energy-related fields. Applicants should be entering an accredited college or university, and have a 3.0 GPA. Application due March 11, 2011.

NYS Wins Race To The Top Funding!

New York State is among the winners in the Obama administration's Race to the Top Phase II program, awarding $696,646,000 in new education grants for the state. In the midst of these harsh economic times, this funding will ensure that New York's children are provided a better opportunity and improved access to quality education.

The Race to the Top state competition is funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is designed to reward states that are leading the way in comprehensive, coherent, statewide education reform across four key areas:

- Adopting standards and assessments that prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace;
- Building data systems that measure student growth and success, and inform teachers and principals how to improve instruction;
- Recruiting, developing, rewarding, and retaining effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; and
- Turning around their lowest-performing schools.

This victory can be credited in part to the major education reforms recently enacted by the New York State legislators. Yet, without the commitment of President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan in recognizing that New York State is worthy of these vital dollars, we would be without this essential investment for our children's future. This is truly great news for families across the state!

Save The Double D Pool

On June 20th, Council Members James and Levin joined Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (who apparently donned his swimming trunks) and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery at a demonstration protesting the City's decision to close of one Brooklyn's most popular outdoor swimming pools- The Double D Pool. It is located at the Thomas Greene Park in Brooklyn, and provides free services (lunches, training, etc.) for residents of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens. There's a petition here.

ATTENTION: Syracuse University Summer College NYC Scholarship Program

The Syracuse University Summer College NYC Scholarship Program is designed for high school students completing their junior year in good academic standing who demonstrate maturity, self-discipline, and the potential to handle college-level work. During the six-week program students explore college-level courses that provide insight into the highter education experience. The selection process is competitive and awarded students will attend the program at no cost.

Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered, applicants must-
-be a current junior attending a NYC public high school
-be in good academic standing with a minimum average of 85%
-be mature, disciplined, and ready for college-level work

Program Overview
-Students selected for participation in this program attend on full-scholarship. Tuition, room & board, books and transportation to and from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, are provided.
-The program offers six credits of college-level instruction taught by School of Education professors, and instructors from the Writing Program in The College of Arts and Sciences.
-Students enroll in two 3-credit courses (CFE 200 and WRT 104)
-Upon completion of the classes, an SU transcript documents the coursework and grades/credits earned.
-Students learn about issuesof youth, schooling, media literacy, popular culture, democracy, and writing at the college level. Emphasis is on improving literacy and developing college-level learning skills.
-Program takes place on the Syracuse University place.
-Students live in an SU dormitory and eat in a campus dining facility.
-Classes are from Monday through Thursday. Fridays are reserved for curriculum-based field trips and special events.
-Afternoons, evenings, and weekends are for recreation and socialization with students from other Summer College programs and for working on class assignments and projects.
