Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons is hosting the Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP), a ten-week summer program for underrepresented minority students to increase interest and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers.

The Summer 2012 Program spans May 28th to August 3rd.

Eligible Participants are:
-Students who have completed at least two years of college or recent college graduates
-African American/Black, Hispanic /Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander and/or economically disadvantaged

SPHSP offerings include:
● Public Health field experience
● Seminars and lectures with public health leaders
● Faculty mentoring
● Visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA
● Stipend upon program completion

Job Opportunity: NYC Parks Lifeguard

New York City Parks' beaches are open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the pools are open from late June through Labor Day.

Lifeguards work 48 hours each week and first-year lifeguards will earn a minimum of $13.57 an hour, for a weekly salary of over $650.00.

ATTENTION: BCAP Summer Camp

The much-celebrated Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP), an innovative summer program for kids ages 7-12 which gives them the chance to interact with their local environment and community, is currently open for registration.

BCAP Summer Camp is sponsored by Heart of Brooklyn, a unique partnership among six of Brooklyn’s most treasured cultural institutions. All lessons are consistent with New York State Learning Standards and are taught by professional educators. BCAP Summer Camp is licensed by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and is inspected twice yearly.

BCAP's curriculum theme for Summer 2012 is Myths and Magic. The program is offered in three two-week sessions in summer 2012:

• Session 1: July 2 – July 13
• Session 2: July 16 – July 27
• Session 3: July 30 – August 10

ATTENTION: PowerPlay Hosts Summer Program for Middle School Girls in FG; Ingersoll Community Center; Deadline 7/7

The "Rising Stars Summer Program" is an exciting six-week program for middle school girls. The program is hosted by PowerPlay NYC, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering girls through sports, teaching life skills and building self-confidence and self-esteem for life. The summer program will include a focus on sports, dance, and life skills.

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. will launch its two-week summer leadership camp for exemplary teenage girls of color from various social, economic, and geographic backgrounds in upstate New York. Participants will be chosen through a strict and highly selective application process. The goal is to foster the participant’s intentional pursuit of excellence, integrity, self-discipline, and collective accountability so that they may be prepared to be sound leaders in academics, public service, and civic engagements.

ATTENTION: BK Navy Yard Development Corporation Internship Available

Navy Yard Young Adult Summer Program

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is again planning its summer program for college-age young adults. The goal of the Summer Young Adult Skills Introduction Program is to place young people directly in private sector work environments and give them the opportunity to learn about the work-place and specific skills needed for certain industries. The program will be for eight weeks, beginning in late June.

Under the program, BNYDC will hire up to 30 qualified college-aged youth to assist with operations, and to provide administrative and clerical help in the offices. Students must be at least 18 years old.

In 2010, the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) employed 35,725 participants and placed them at 5,800 worksites. Participants work in a variety of entry-level jobs at government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, sports enterprises, and retail organizations.

-Emphasize real-world labor expectations;
-Increase awareness of services offered by local community-based organizations;

Brooklyn Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens) is the Borough President’s summer youth employment program, which encourages Brooklyn businesses to invest in our youth through employment. In the last few years, hundreds of teens between the ages of 16 and 18 have been hired through HEAT.

First Lady Michelle Obama Honors Heart of Brooklyn’s BCAP Initiative; One of 15 Youth Programs Awarded Nationwide

First Lady Michelle Obama will recognize Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP), the youth education program that gave rise to the award-winning Heart of Brooklyn cultural partnership, with a prestigious National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award at a White House ceremony on Wednesday, October 20. Heart of Brooklyn Director Ellen F. Salpeter and BCAP Summer Camp Adventurer Jamell Allen-Thomas will accept the award on behalf of the thousands of children served by BCAP since 1998.

Selected from a pool of more than 400 nominations, BCAP is one of 15 after-school and out-of-school programs across the country to be presented with a 2010 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award (formerly, the Coming Up Taller Award- BCAP also was named a 2009 semi-finalist for the Coming Up Taller Award) from Mrs. Obama. The award is the highest honor such programs can receive in the United States. BCAP is one of two New York City-based organizations to be recognized at the ceremony, along with youth media organization Global Action Project.

The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards are administered by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). With the award, Heart of Brooklyn will also receive $10,000 to support its engaging programming that weaves connections between art, world culture, literature, history, nature and science.

Job Opportunity- Municipal Lifeguard Training Program

Want to help the community, train in CPR and first-aid, work outdoors and earn money?

Park lifeguards plays a critical role in the operation of 54 outdoor pools and 7 beaches situated on the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound. By recruiting qualified people the City is able to open more beaches to the public and offer more programming at pools.

The training program is FREE, and those who successfully complete the course and start work will be paid for time spent training. The qualifying test is available at centers citywide and the only requirements are that applicants must be able to swim 50 yards in 35 second, have eyesight no worse than 20/30 in on eye and 20/40 in the other and be 16 years of age by June/July of summer 2010. First-year lifeguards earn at least $13.50 an hour and work 6 days a week.
