Please note this is an unpaid summer internship but applicants will have invaluable experience for future careers in social advocacy, political affairs, and community activism. Interns should be motivated and have a passion for public service. The ideal candidate must possess outstanding organizing skills, the ability to gather data, as well as communicate and listen to constituent needs.

• You will be assigned to a specific project developing from areas such as Housing Development, Homeless Issues, Environmental Issues, Public Health, Education and After-School Programs as well as other needs.
• You will be required to work outside of out of the office at least three days per week.

Navy Yard Young Adult Summer Program

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is again planning its summer program for college-age young adults. The goal of the Summer Young Adult Skills Introduction Program is to place young people directly in private sector work environments and give them the opportunity to learn about the work-place and specific skills needed for certain industries. The program will be for eight weeks, beginning in late June.

Under the program, BNYDC will hire up to 30 qualified college-aged youth to assist with operations, and to provide administrative and clerical help in the offices. Students must be at least 18 years old.

ATTENTION: Free IT Training For High School Students

Free IT Training

Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internship. The program is providing free IT training for anyone in that category with a high school diploma or a GED that has an interest in IT. The program is free.

This program asks for a 1-year commitment between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm. Each participant will be provided with a stipend, and after six months, internships at competitive companies could be available.

Year Up has achieved excellent results to date:

100% placement of qualified students into apprenticeships

83% student retention

90% of apprentices meet or exceed apprenticeship partner expectations

87% of graduates placed in full or part-time positions within 4 months of graduation

$15/hr average wage at placement

2010 Summer Youth Employment Program - DEADLINE: Friday, May 21st

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides New York City youth between the ages of 14 and 24 with summer employment and educational opportunities. In 2009, the Department of Youth and Community Development enrolled 52,255 participants and placed them at 8,688 worksites. Participants work in a variety of entry-level jobs at government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, sports enterprises, and retail organizations.

Brooklyn Navy Yard hiring college students for the summer

The NYT-Local reports that the Brooklyn Navy Yard will be hiring around 30 students for various jobs including administrative work and woodwork. No More Rubber Rooms

As of April 15, 2010, the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers have put an end to the much-hated teacher temporary assignment centers (aka "rubber rooms"). Those who enjoy legal agreements can go to town here.
