Kickoff MLK Weekend with The Meeting!


If Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X had a conversation what would they have said? That fictitious 1965 meeting is the subject of the award-winning play by Jeff Stetson. These two iconic figures of the civil rights movement come to life this Thursday at Kumble Theater. Check it out!

The Meeting is an engaging & intelligent play that depicts a fictional account of a secret meeting between Malcolm X & Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following the bombing of Malcolm X's home and shortly before he was assassinated, Malcolm and Martin meet in a room inside the historic Theresa Hotel. They were two men with different ideologies, but a common understanding of the plight of Black America.

The Brooklyn campus dance majors perform an exciting program of modern dance including a master work choreographed by Donald Byrd and restaged by Stephanie Guilland-Brown, guest artists Brian Brooks and Bradley Shelver as well as new choreographic works by dance faculty members Alenka Cizmesija and Mary Ann Wall.

You won’t want to miss this special event honoring an important generation of Brooklyn’s Black male dancers and choreographers, who have served their communities and influenced younger dancers, including Obediah Wright, Baba Chuck Davis, Ron Brown, Jamel Gaines, Reggie Wilson, Michael Manswell, and Kevin “Shock-a-lock” Porter. They will be joined by protégés of their choosing for an evening that includes dances by the kings, a panel discussion, including Ella Moore and Lee “Ako” Thompson and a crowning moment.

This event is presented as part of Brooklyn Arts Council’s year-long initiative Black Brooklyn Renaissance: Black Art + Culture, 1960– 2010, sponsored by MetLife Foundation and presented in partnership with Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.

Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus presents their Liberty Partnership Summer Enrichment Program for high school juniors and seniors.

The program spans August 3rd- August 31st from 10AM- 3PM. The program takes place at LIU- Brooklyn at 1 University Plaza.

Students will receive academic tutoring, training in computer literacy, and college prep instruction. The program also consists of various cultural enrichment components including health and lifestyle management, career development, and recreational and educational trips.
