ATTENTION: Community Discussion on Bedford-Union Armory; 1/9

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz invites the community to attend a discussion on the Bedford-Union armory. We invite the community to work with elected officials to turn the former military installation into a world-class community facility! Participants will also get a chance early in the day to view the armory.

ATTENTION: ART/NY Holiday Toy Drive!


The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (ART/NY) is participating in the Brooklyn Borough President's Office Best of Brooklyn Toy Drive.

The organization is accepting donations at their South Oxford Space. They will collect new unwrapped toys suitable for children ages 3 to 10 years of age. There is a box in the first floor lobby for collection. The toys will be picked up on December 5, 2011, and donated to more than 2,500 children from public housing developments, congregations, and social service organizations at the “Best of Brooklyn Holiday Program”.

South Oxford Space is located at 138 S. Oxford Street between Hanson Place and Atlantic Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. If you come to drop off donations, use buzzer number 1.

Brooklyn Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens) is the Borough President’s summer youth employment program, which encourages Brooklyn businesses to invest in our youth through employment. In the last few years, hundreds of teens between the ages of 16 and 18 have been hired through HEAT.

CM James Questions FCR At AY District Service Cabinet Meeting

On November 4, 2010, Council Member James co-sponsored a meeting (with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz) of the Atlantic Yards District Service Cabinet to discuss the development as well as ongoing traffic concerns.

Below is Council Member James' questioning FCR on their affordable housing promise, community involvement, and involvement of small/local businesses at Barclay's Center. She also addresses FCR's proposal to limit access to its developments, and ongoing parking concerns.

CM James, BK BP Markowitz, and AM Camara Host Premier of Hip-Hop Music Video Entitled "Harmony"

Twenty Years After the Crown Heights Riots, Black and Jewish Community Leaders Endorse DeScribe’s “Harmony” Hip Hop Music Video as a Groundbreaking Tool for Unity and Racial Harmony in Brooklyn

DeScribe (born Shneur HaSofer), Crown Heights’ Hasidic Hip Hop and R&B artist, held a press conference at Borough Hall on August 2nd, 2010 at 1:00 pm with NYS Senator Eric Adams and Borough President Marty Markowitz, Council Member Letitia James and Assembly Member Karim Camara to premier his revolutionary “Harmony” music video, which celebrates diversity, understanding and harmony amongst the Crown Heights’ Black and Jewish communities.

This event was presented in collaboration with heads of the Crown Heights community and Shemspeed, an independent recording label and artists’ promotional agency based in Crown Heights. The event was sponsored by COLlive.com, one of the most prominent Chabad Hasidic media outlets, and Marley Coffee, owned by Bob Marley’s son Rohan Marley. Marley Coffee helps promote and support environmental and social justice causes, including aiding Jamaica’s poor communities and “going green.”

According to a recent article the NY Daily News, "African-American men are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as white men. And Caribbean-born men in Brooklyn are three times as likely to die from the disease as U.S.-born men." Save The Double D Pool

On June 20th, Council Members James and Levin joined Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (who apparently donned his swimming trunks) and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery at a demonstration protesting the City's decision to close of one Brooklyn's most popular outdoor swimming pools- The Double D Pool. It is located at the Thomas Greene Park in Brooklyn, and provides free services (lunches, training, etc.) for residents of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens. There's a petition here.
