The Fort Greene Association (FGA) encourages residents to support the Lafayette Avenue Traffic Calming campaign (The Make Lafayette Safer Campaign). The campaign will be presenting to Brooklyn Community Board 2's Transportation Committee for their regular meeting this Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
FGA invites supporters to attend the meeting and help bring bike lanes to Lafayette Avenue. Attendees who wish to speak can request two minutes in the public forum at the end of the meeting. Details follow:

CM James Announced First Annual Building Bridges Bike Day; Sat. Aug. 13; Grand Army Plaza

COUNCIL MEMBER LETITIA JAMES ANNOUNCES FIRST ANNUAL BUILDING BRIDGES BIKE DAY THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 AT GRAND ARMY PLAZA
Building Bridges Bike Day was founded by Council Member Letitia James to work with the public and other community officials, public officials, and advocates to raise awareness about public safety. The event is taking place at the crossroads of three major bike lanes, running lanes, and pedestrian walkways, and is a symbol of the bridge between these diverse groups.
The purpose of the event is to inform the public about safety concerns, and a table and tent for the Building Bridges Bike Day will be located in the center of the Green Market at Grand Army Plaza on this Saturday afternoon. Participants will coordinate between the local riders and pedestrians to create a greater awareness of rules, regulations, and safe streets in New York City.
Starting at 11 a.m. (during peak time of the Grand Army Plaza Green Market), the Building Bridges Bike Day table will feature Council Member Letitia James, Council Member Steve Levin, Council Member Brad Lander, and the initiative run by staff of Council Member James’ Office. Following presentations by elected officials and safety advocates, ambassadors from Transportation Alternatives and Recycle-A-Bicycle will talk to riders at the market and along Prospect Park’s bike lanes. Safety information, maps, other literature and bicycle donation information will be available.
“I’ve started bicycle riding myself this summer, and my hope is that a renewed culture of respect for pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to grow as the outcome of this very important initiative,” said Council Member Letitia.

ATTENTION: Construction Updates in 35th District
Beginning Saturday, July 17th, the New York City Department of Transportation will add bike lanes to Flushing Avenue, South of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This plan will reduce the travel lanes to one lane in each direction, and result in the removal of on-street parking on the north side of Flushing.Please see the attached flyer for further information, or contact our office at (718) 260-9191.

Due to roadway construction
expected to start the week of July 12th, Fulton Street from Boerum Place to Flatbush Avenue will be closed over the next two months. The first sequence of construction will be from Boerum Place to Smith Street.
Here are more specific details:
1. There will be a full closure of Fulton Street at the areas being renovated.
2. The bulk of the demolition work will be at night with the remaining roadwork to take place during the day.
3. Side streets will remain open and construction will be phased such that north and south movement through Fulton Street will be maintained at all times.
4. As always, deliveries will not be permitted on Fulton Street. Please use side street loading/unloading zones which will remain available during roadbed construction.
5. Emergency vehicles will continue to have access along Fulton Street.
6. Private garbage pick up and delivery arrangements need to be coordinated beforehand.
7. NYC Transit will be rerouting buses to Livingston Street during this time period.
8. NYC Transit will be responsible for communicating these route changes to the riding public.

CM James Supports Flushing Avenue Bike Lane

Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn is getting a two-way, protected bike lane linking cyclists between the Manhattan Bridge and Williamsburg
This is an effort to energize the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway project- in the works since 1993
The Flushing Avenue bike lane is a win-win situation for the Department of Transportation, Brooklyn and elected officials. The City has abandoned its contentious plan to convert Flushing Avenue to a one-way street to accommodate a two-way bike lane. The new design will maintain two-way car flow, yet still provide for a bike lane.
This new proposal maintains two-way traffic between Kent Avenue and Navy Street, as well as adds a two-way protected bike lane east of Washington Avenue (a jersey barrier and buffer zones between cars and cyclists).
“As an advocate for compromise, I am pleased that the new plan for Flushing Avenue is satisfactory to both drivers and bikers. I want to commend Council Member James for leading the discussion and negotiations for the new plan,” said Council Member Stephen Levin. “As a member of the Environmental Protection Committee, I am an advocate for alternative transportation and minimizing traffic flow. However, on a busy street, it is important that traffic flow is maintained while we continue the effort to green our city. I urge both drivers and bikers alike to call 311 or my office if there are any problems or concerns with the new street configuration.”
The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway initiative, which is overseen by the Department of Transportation, has developed a plan that pleases all parties involved. Drivers and residents of the nearby Navy Yard area will not be forced to acquiesce to bikers and exit Flushing Avenue in one direction, as the original plan included.
“Residents living around Flushing Avenue, and tenants of the Navy Yard who attended the recent public meeting were not content with the original bike lane proposal - because of the one-way street component. We are grateful that DOT has responded to their concerns,” said Council Member Letitia James. “Of course, our long-term goals are to create safe pathways for everyone in the community. I support slowing down traffic, along with creating an easier, usable bikeway. This proposal is part of the big picture for the future waterfront greenway, and will positively change Flushing Avenue. I also know first hand from constituents that bikers are very ready for this long-awaited change.”
